Outer Banks

The Outer Banks are barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina.  There are many quaint towns along Highway 12, including Corolla, Duck, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Hatteras, and Ocracoke.  There are plenty of accommodations available on the island, but we rented a house in the Four Seasons neighborhood in Duck.  Here are some of my favorite things to do during your vacation to the Outer Banks:

Things to do:

Wright Brothers National Park
Walk around the historic site of the Wright Brothers first successful airplane flight at Kitty Hawk.  Inside the museum there is a model of their first airplane and exhibits detailing the history of the first flight.  It is worth your time to stay and listen to the ranger talk in the main hall that describes the journey of Wilbur and Orville Wright.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
Located on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, this lighthouse is one of the oldest and most famous in the United States.  Visitors can walk around the grounds and tour some of the historic building.  You can also climb the stairs to the top for great views of the coast.

The Lost Colony Outdoor Drama
Spend an evening on Roanoke Island at the outdoor production of The Lost Colony.  This play is the oldest and longest-running outdoor drama in America.  The Lost Colony retells the story of the first English colonists who settled in Roanoke and their mysterious disappearance over 400 years ago.  The Waterside Theatre is an outdoor amphitheater, so you will need a jacket and some mosquito spray when the sun sets.

Jockey’s Ridge State Park
This state park has the largest sand dunes on the east coast.  The park is located in Nags Head at Milepost 12 on US 158 By-pass (South Croatan Highway).  Visit in the evening to avoid the hot sand during the day.   The top of the dunes is a great place to watch the sun setting over the Pamlico Sound.  Wear sandals or no shoes at all because the sand can be knee deep in some places.    This is a must see place to visit!

Can't miss places to eat in Duck:
Duck Donuts for breakfast
Fishbones on the water for dinner
